Study engineering abroad

Mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical and more. Engineering degrees abroad combine strong theory with labs, design projects and industry exposure.

Engineering degrees teach you to design, build and improve the physical world, from bridges and power grids to medical devices and electric vehicles. Overseas programmes put real weight on laboratory work, team design projects and professional practice.

Accreditation matters. In the UK, look for recognition by bodies such as the IET or IMechE; in Australia, Engineers Australia; in Canada, the CEAB for undergraduate degrees. Accredited programmes make it easier to register as a professional engineer later.

Germany is a standout choice for engineering at postgraduate level because many public universities charge little or no tuition, though learning some German will help with internships and jobs.

Popular specialisations

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil & Structural Engineering

Where to study it

  • Australia: Australia pairs research-led public universities with a well-regulated system for international students. Indian graduates get extra post-study work time under the India–Australia trade agreement, though visa fees and entry checks have tightened since 2024.
  • Canada: Canada offers strong public universities and job-focused colleges, generous off-campus work rules and a post-graduation work permit. Since 2024 the government has capped new study permits and tightened work-permit rules, so course choice matters more than ever.
  • United Kingdom: The UK offers one-year master's degrees and three-year bachelor's degrees that save time and money. The Graduate Route allows two years of post-study work for applications made up to 31 December 2026, dropping to 18 months from January 2027.
  • United States: The United States has thousands of accredited colleges, flexible degrees and deep research funding. STEM graduates can work for up to three years on OPT, but visa policy is shifting in 2025–26, so students need careful, current advice.
  • Germany: Germany's public universities charge little or no tuition for most programmes, and its engineering and research strengths are world famous. Graduates get 18 months to look for work, but you must plan for a blocked account and for learning German.
