Studying in United Kingdom: the overview
British universities have educated generations of Indian students, and the historic links between the two countries run deep. The UK's biggest attraction is time: most taught master's degrees last one year and most bachelor's degrees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland last three, which can lower the total cost compared with longer programmes elsewhere.
Quality is regulated nationally. Universities are independent but must meet standards set by the Office for Students in England and equivalent bodies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish bachelor's degrees usually run for four years and have a broader first year.
Immigration rules have tightened since 2024. Most students on taught postgraduate courses can no longer bring dependants, the visa fee and health surcharge have risen, and the Graduate Route is being shortened to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates who apply from 1 January 2027. The government has also announced plans for a levy on international student fee income, which may affect fees.
For a well-prepared student the UK remains an efficient, high-quality option, especially for business, law, finance, engineering and the creative industries.

How much money do I need in the bank?
Enough for any unpaid first-year tuition plus up to 9 months of living costs at £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere, held for 28 days. The figures are set to rise on 30 November 2026.
